There is a whole group dedicated to getting their hands on these super illegal things for experimental purposes, and they arent above testing their products on random neopians who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. If a neopian wants to bleach and dye their fur so they look like a different color that’s fine, but to try and alter their color via magic like that is just straight up dangerous, to say nothing of totally changing their species. We’re talking about things that get in there and change the basic genetic makeup of a person. Even “paintbrushes” are considered a highly volatile magic, and those found in possession of one can face some serious fines, if not jail time. All the methods for changing that kind of thing permanently are dangerous, as exhibited by mutant pets being a thing. That said, most of the methods of becoming a mutant these days are 100% super duper illegal, so any newly made mutant neopets have to find a way to integrate themselves without drawing too much attention.Īs far as my own personal world goes: no. In some cases, long-standing mutant families have found ways to rise to fame in some way or another. In the outskirts of bigger cities, there are some pretty big populations of mutant xwees/korbats/blumaroos/zafaras/techos who were just born that way, and a lot of the time they like to boast about their mutant heritage. Of course this doesn’t stop them from mingling with each other/the general populace, but their ability to do so depends largely on the area they live in and how close to the “normal” breed they appear. In general, mutants aren’t considered a subspecies or anything else of that sort. Seeing as this is a world with a lab ray and a lot of magic, weird stuff is bound to happen occasionally. Like actual mutants, not just mutations that make neopets look more pretty (not that Mutants arent lovely uwu). They’ve got Lore that needs digging into, but its all that sorta “we got made by some kinda god/goddess/etc our bodies are brought forth by their grace we spurn the heathen world outside blah blah blah.” obviously there are other cases that can lead to these guys showing up outside of those divine happenings, but they’re like…… once every few hundred year occurrences. Either way, there’s some proof that neopets like that exist, they just usually keep to their own communities away from everyone else and don’t care too much about being bothered. Fire is more common without the actual flame bits, but even those with them are a little more common (again, more of a specific subspecies within a specific community, namely because it’s real hard for anyone who isn’t made of fire to smooch all up on someone who is). For the most part, I think element-based neopets exist as something closer to cryptids.

That’d be your water, woodland, swamp gas, magma, ice, and some (but not all) fire neopets, plus any others in that vein that I might be forgetting. The next type of pet are the more elemental type ones.

For one reason or another snot/slime is just… a common thing. Also: Snot falls into the subspecies category and not one of the other categories I’ll bring up later. I guess that means that technically the names of all the known neopets are just… their scientific names? U got urself a draik dariganus or smth idk.

I think the easiest way to put it is like… coyotes and dogs can technically breed because they’re kinda the same thing, but not really, and they just… don’t usually go through the trouble. That isn’t to say they’re totally incapable of hybridizing, it’s just a lot trickier. That is to say, maraquans usually only ever make more maraquans, because for a lot of them a romance with someone on land just isn’t practical or, in some cases, physically possible. In these cases, however, it’s a lot more likely to find “purebred” types, if only for compatibility reasons. Basically any color that adds things like horns/wings/weird tails/etc but is Still Organic (so no toy/relic/etc colors) are considered more like a subspecies, and could, in theory, be combined with any of the other pelt colors.
